Primitive & Colonial Inspired Homes
Hello, my name is Karen. I live in a small town in Central Wisconsin with my husband of 31 years. We built our tri-level home in 1980 on our beautiful wooded acreage. I have had so much fun over the years giving my modern home a primitive, aged look. It is still a work in progress and I am constantly changing and re-arranging as I find new pieces.
I love to collect old clothing, especially blue and black calico and homespuns. I am especially drawn to children's clothing, shoes, toys and old dolls. In my free time I enjoy rug hooking, stitching samplers and dolls. I also paint signs and gameboards and love the challenge of transforming something newer into something old and worn looking. My husband says that I can" make a silk purse into a sows ear." Like most prim lovers, that is considered to be true compliment!

I love how the black textiles and yellowware look against the yellow painted walls.

PRIMITIVE INSPIRED SUNROOM
Photo Below: Believe it or not, the huge old red cupboard in this room I found for free! While attending a wedding shower in a neighboring town I spotted the cupboard in a pile of junk in someone's driveway with a free sign on it. It was square nailed and had a neat chippy chrome yellow paint. Needless to say, I just about fainted! Luckily we had our pickup truck along or I would have had to stand guard while my husband made the hour long drive home to pick up the truck. The cupboard was missing a drawer and a door but my brother was able to construct new parts for it. Since I was unable to match the original paint, I chose to paint and distress it using "Paprika" paint color from Country Living .
Photo Above: The niche above the doorway is a great place to display all of my Red Wing crocks and jugs.

PRIMITIVE INSPIRED GRANDCHILDREN'S BEDROOM
This is my favorite room! This room is devoted to my collection of children's clothing, furniture and toys.
Photo Left: The old miniature cupboard in the corner was made from an old gun powder crate. It holds small children's toys stockings, shoes and tin dishes. The cupboards sits on a blue painted dough box that I found at a flea market. I also keep my collection of Art Fabric Mills Dolls here.

PRIMITIVE INSPIRED MASTER BEDROOM
Photo Left: I made the millinery sign that hangs over the bed in our master bedroom based on an antique sign I saw in a magazine.
Photo Right: My dress form was found at my very favorite flea market in Elkhorn, Wisconsin.

I named her "Leona" after a rather voluptuous friend that I had in high school. My Leona is a husky girl! She is wearing a black calico dress and a homespun bonnet.

My Kitchen is home to all of my blue graniteware, aprons and bonnets. I just cannot pass up a good bonnet!

"Plain Farm Folk" in Central Wisconsin

What attracted me to the cupboard were the drawers on top. Usually the drawers are in the middle of the 2 sections. It almost appears that the top piece is upside down. I like to imagine that the maker wanted to keep the things in those drawers out of reach of his small children.

Photo Left: My husband and I  found the possum belly cupboard at a local farm auction. It was in really bad shape. Hubby  repaired the drawers and we removed years of grime from the wood. It  is one of my most favorite pieces because we worked on it together.
